Monday, July 23 Performance: “Ennishi” Intentions Understanding. Erin’s self-reflection: Today was my solo performance. I thought of the idea back during one of our first performances. I thought of the idea with trees and string. So I was really happy when I could use it in my solo performance. I did this performance at Veteran’s Acres. We chose a good spot with many trees with grass underneath. For my performance I used red string as the thing that connects everything together (this is what “Ennishi” means). We all wrote names of plants and animals on cards and I strung them up on the string as I wove it among the trees. It was a very peaceful performance that was a great end to a hard day. It was fun to see that the next day, when we went back, kids were playing in the string and looking at the cards. It gave me a feeling that I had really done something that everyone could really enjoy. Lori’s reflection: Wow…so peaceful. It was great to watch. You sort of got caught up in the moment. Erin kept walking in and out and around the trees for a good amount of time. The wind was nice, too. The cards blew slightly in the wind. This was her solo performance and I think it was wonderful. You could tell that she really cared about what she was doing. The next day when we were back, kids were playing with it the next day. We got to be audience for that, too. They seemed to be enjoying themselves quite a bit. -And- Brood 13 was privileged to meet with Program Director Mequitta Ahuja to clarify our goals for the project and do some important processing work toward being able to finish our work 3 weeks from now. |

Tuesday, July 24, 2007 “Self
Respect/Brood 14” Intentions: In 2024, all races and countries will be united. We went to Veterans Acres Park again. Selena and Puddin’ were in one group, and in the other group, Alex and Nicole. They each took two cards and came up with part of a performance of the intentions for all four people. In Nicole and Alex’s performance, everyone drew pictures on 14 trees with their fingers while singing Amazing Grace. Alex found a beautiful tree cathedral site for the performance and they tried to express something miraculous through the singing. They chose to draw pictures on the trees as a way of including the idea of artmaking and publishing into the performance. In the performance that Selena, Puddin, and I made, everyone came together out of the woods to meet at a place where four paths converged. The four performers grasped each others’ forearms to make a square, and then moved in a circle while speaking one word each about self respect. It turned out great. I loved watching it. The scenery worked great, too. |

Wednesday, July 25 “Dying Roses Carried in the Wind”Documentation written by Selena Lester (14) Intentions: In 2024 I am living with animals and nature peacefully, and side by side like Snow White, as is my community and world. In 2024, there will be no pollution from cars, factories, or humans. Blue Sky Project will have successfully completed its 20th season, having impacted the lives of more than 500 area teens and 100 artists. In 2024, harmonious relationship to family and everyone else in this world. All people are healthy and live longer. Continuous sharing of knowledge/learnings/experiences, to maximize potentials of well being. Today I made a solo performance about Snow White, living longer, trees, and less pollution. To incorporate all of these things we went to Veterans Acres Park where there are many trees, and possibly even more mosquitoes! I walked along the path in the woods dropping rose petals behind me, which symbolized the oldest person in the world’s age, which is 128. As I was walking, the audience (my mom, my neighbor Betty Weller, Nicole, Alex, and Erin) walked behind me. At the end of my walk there was a platform and on it was a snow cone maker, red apple, red bush tea, red kool-aid syrup, and a cooler with ice in it. While I was on the platform I took a bite of the apple, drank some of the bush tea, and then proceeded to make snow cones for everyone. Unfortunately, the ice melted too quickly so I could only make 2 snow cones. Then the performance ended. Overall I had a lot of fun with my performance. |

Thursday, July 26 Performance: ““Take a Pill, You’ll Feel Better”” Intentions: In 2024, there will be a cure for cancer, people will be more accepting of other people’s differences, I will be happy, cars will run on a renewable resource, and people will be healthier. In 2024 we’ll have a healthy ecosystem and healthy people. Global warming has come to an end in 2024! In 2024 the Middle East is the cultural center of the world. Nicole’s self-reflection: Today I made a solo performance based on the above intentions. In my research before the performance, I was trying to understand what exactly the “middle east” is. In the process of working on intentions about global warming and a healthy ecosystem, I found out that access to freshwater is the most serious environmental issue facing the Middle East. In the last few weeks, Brood 13 members have talked a lot about all of the different medications we are taking. We’ve been thinking about and pills a lot, so I have had pills on my mind. Then I found out that there is new research on aspirin as a possible cure for cancer. It was raining today and Brood 13 was without a car, so we stayed on the campus of McHenry County College. I tried to set up a table and my aspirin right outside the front door of the college, but this was disturbing to the security staff of the college, who thought I was stealing furniture and distributing lethal drugs. The performance began with Selena playing flute. I approached the flagpole area and read a text about the geographical boundaries of the Middle East. Then I collected rain water in 7 little cups from the puddles in the road. I offered aspirin and rainwater to the audience and passers-by, saying “Here, have a pill. You’ll feel better.” Then I poured out and smashed all 7 bottles of aspirin into dust. From the powder of the aspirin I drew a sun to represent the solar form of renewable energy to stop global warming. Selena played her flute throughout, taking short breaks during which we could hear the sound of the hammer against the aspirin and pavement. |
