Costumes and Strong LQQKS are a rich source of creative expression for me. As a child, my mother taught me basic sewing and needlework. Costumes, makeup, and masks were an important part of my theater training. I was deeply influenced by the artist Irina Bochorishvili of the Theater of Moscow South-West, from whom I learned a great deal about fabrication, the use of unusual (free or cheap) materials, and conceptualization. Spending time in New Orleans for Mardi Gras re-ignited a passion for costuming. People on Chicago’s queer party scene show up in a stunning array of bold, strong LQQKS, and I love the mutual appreciation folks have for each others’ multi-gendered expressions.
